Entry 18: Changing Project

Changing Project:

Due to issues with the last project I have decided to change projects and focus on my original one.

Originally, I had decided to switch project because I didn't have a clear direction to take the game idea. However, in light of recent developments I was moved to evaluate two possible recourse:

  1. Find another project to work on that I was keenly interested on and make sure that it could work out.

  2. Fall back on my original game idea and re-evaluate its potential and feasibility.

With the current distributions of people working on projects and the current lack of interest I have, I decided the safer option was to come up with a project proposal and present it on Tuesday, 18/01/2022, and use that as a test of concept of the game idea. Depending on the reception and outcome, then I would need to find a team to work on afterward.

Considerations & Limitations:

While trying to come up with a game idea I had these restraints in-mind:

  1. A project doable by one person

  2. Elements that concern characters are the priority

  3. Using past research and outcomes as a starting point

  4. Engaging experience

My foci/ Interest:

  1. Character Designs

  2. Art/ Concepts

  3. Gameplay Loop

Stream of Ideas/ Thoughts:

Idea 1: Turn Base RPG

  1. Play a turn base strategic game using multiple units.

  2. Pros: Allows for more showcasing of character designs.

  3. Turn base RPG is a mentally engaging model when done correctly.

  4. Cons: Execution of game idea would require in-depth understanding of the genre and a difficult balancing act between skill and difficulty level.

  5. No compelling context or essential experience for the game come to mind.

Idea 2: Fallen Skies

  1. Play as a the Orbital Reflector task with repairing the shattered Moon.

  2. 3D flight movement mixed with solving puzzles.

  3. Initial idea for a personal experience filled with characters with interesting story.

  4. Cons: Scale is too large and far too many foci to potentially focus on.

Idea 3: Your Words

  1. Utilising the mechanic of gliding and flying, a game of navigating the struggle of a character lacking self confidence.

  2. Jump through different stages with different platforming puzzle as you dodge incoming 'negative thoughts' collecting 'pages' or 'words' or encouragement.

  3. Intended experience is meant to be abstract and personal

  4. Pro: A simple idea.

  5. Cons: I fear it lacks a strong sense of identity and is missing a the key aspect of a strong key visual.

Idea 4: Broken Reflections

  1. Playable character- Orbital Reflector.

  2. Play as a robot trying to break out of their design or programming

  3. Power through self-expressions/ different outfits/ weapons does different things

  4. Play through different level trying to escape

  5. Bullet hell gameplay experience

Arriving at idea 4, I believe that the game idea was both feasible and something that I was excited for.
